Pickleball Paddle Overgrips FAQs
What is the purpose of a pickleball overgrip?
A pickleball overgrip adds an extra layer of cushioning and traction over your paddle’s handle. It improves comfort, enhances grip security, and helps absorb moisture so your paddle doesn’t slip during play.
When’s the right time to start using an overgrip?
You can start using an overgrip as soon as you want more comfort or better control on your pickleball paddle. Another good reason to add an overgrip is when your pickleball paddles starts losing grip or slips away while you're playing.
On the other hand, many players add one early on to fine-tune grip size or improve feel, especially during longer sessions.
Do I need to put an overgrip on a new pickleball paddle?
Adding an overgrip to a brand new pickleball paddle is not required, but many players choose to add one right away so they can tailor the grip thickness to their hands, improve comfort, and sweat absorption from the first use.
How often should you change an overgrip on a pickleball paddle?
Overgrips should be changed once they lose tackiness, feel slick, or show signs of wear. For regular players, this can be as frequent once each month. On the other hand, occasional players may only need to replace them two months for optimum grip.
Do note that overgrips can deteriorate even when the paddle is not in use. Once an overgrip has been played with, it begins absorbing sweat and moisture, which gradually breaks down the material over time. Even if the paddle is stored away, this trapped moisture can cause the overgrip to lose its tackiness, softness, and overall performance.
