Getting started in pickleball is affordable and easy — especially when you’ve got the right gear. Here’s a beginner-friendly rundown of the essential pickleball equipment you’ll need to get on court with confidence.

1. Pickleball Paddle

Your paddle is your most important piece of gear. Beginner paddles are usually lightweight and have a larger sweet spot, which helps with control and forgiveness on off-centre hits.

What to look for:

  • Lightweight (around 205 – 220 grams)
  • Graphite or composite face
  • Polymer core for a softer feel and better touch

🛍️ Tip: At our store, we stock a great range of beginner paddles from trusted brands like Selkirk, Franklin, and JOOLA.

2. Pickleball Balls

There are two types of balls: indoor and outdoor. Outdoor balls are heavier with smaller holes and are better suited to wind and rougher surfaces. Indoor balls are softer and have larger holes.

  • Outdoor Balls: More durable and ideal for Aussie outdoor courts
  • Indoor Balls: Quieter, softer bounce, perfect for indoor gyms or school halls
3. Court Shoes

It’s important to wear proper court-specific shoes. Unlike running shoes, these are built for side-to-side movement, grip, and stability on hard courts.

  • Look for: Non-marking soles, cushioned midsoles, and strong lateral support
4. Helpful Accessories
  • Paddle overgrips
  • Pickleball bags or backpacks
  • Water bottle
  • Towel or sweatbands
  • Visor or hat for sun protection
